Air Conditioning Troubleshooting: Common Problems and Solutions
The warmer weather is almost upon us, which means that the last thing you want is for your air conditioning to malfunction. It is essential to maintain an ambient temperature in your home if you and your family want to remain comfortable. Troubleshooting AC system problems can be a thing of the past with the following common-sense operational procedures and routine residential air conditioning maintenance.
The AC Won’t Turn On
At the top of your list is when the system does not switch on. The lack of power can often be as simple as a faulty fuse or a tripped circuit breaker, meaning you can reset the circuit breaker or replace the fuse yourself. It also could be down to broken or loose wiring or even thermostat issues.
Thermostat Issues
When your thermostat is not working or is not calibrated, it may not be able to transmit signals to the air conditioner. If you have set your thermostat to the lowest temperature, and the system still refuses to start, it’s time to call in the experts, who will come and recalibrate or replace the thermostat. Some of the older thermostats are more often subject to calibration issues. However, sometimes the newer programmable ones are not easy to program.
Low Refrigerant Equates Low Efficiency
While air conditioning troubleshooting can uncover an under-performing system, it could be that the unit is low on refrigerant. If this is the case, it usually means it was either undercharged when installed or has sprung a leak. If you notice your home is not cooling as it once did, a low refrigerant level may be the cause. Without the right refrigerant levels, the heat and humidity remain in the air.
